Hello everybody 👋

So for the next week - I’ll be 🐦 here, that’ll be fun. There’s an interview with me that should give an idea of me, so going forward I’ll just dive into what’s going on in my FOSS life! 🚀

Jul 7, 2021

So the biggest thing for me the lat few days has been the @nextclouders Hub 22 release. We launched this with a video, which we’ve been working on like crazy for the last 6 weeks. Let me try to give a bit of an idea of how that works and what that’s like!

  • Jos

Jul 7, 2021

@Nextclouders So last time we did this, make a ‘virtual’ launch, we did it pretty ad-hoc - this time, we put together a plan, so we had a clear time line for everything:

  • script

  • screencasts

  • recording of ppl

  • editing & overlays

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 7, 2021

@Nextclouders @jospoortvliet Next, well - execution. Thing is, you need to know every feature that makes it for the script. And at Nextcloud, we work very agile so this is harder than you might think! We then put together a story, and turned into text-to-speak.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 7, 2021

@Nextclouders @jospoortvliet In there we also defined screenshots and screen casts and the other graphics - the overlay images and such. Which we could only start making after Nextcloud 22 was developed enough that those features were there. And didn’t change - UI improvements kept coming..

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 7, 2021

@Nextclouders @jospoortvliet And of course, we did the recording of people in our office in Berlin. During the Q&A some ppl asked if we had a green screen (no) and why the bricks weren’t horizontal (this is Berlin… nothing is straight here 🤣)

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 7, 2021

@Nextclouders @jospoortvliet You know, it’s 100x easier to give a talk at a conference than to do a recording like this. You want it perfect, you know? Which is quite hard, so a 10 minute piece can take hours to record… But we got there. Well, maybe not 100% perfect, but pretty decent!

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 7, 2021

@Nextclouders @jospoortvliet Screen casts, aside from needing Nextcloud to be fully ready and deployed, have a similar issue, but cutting is a bit easier - so I spend a lot of time doing ‘casting and cutting. And then - the editing and overlays, done by Ofor, our video editor!

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 7, 2021

@Nextclouders @jospoortvliet Oh, and of course, some pieces came from other people. The two amazing community members who developed Collectives helped us get the app ready and deployed for recording, and get the script and recording reviewed. And we had end users send great videos, too.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 7, 2021

@Nextclouders @jospoortvliet They did epic work, there, making those videos on pretty short notice. Many thanks to Marc & Johan from SiB and Steve from the city of Geneva. And of course our own Alexandra. So, as I said - 6 weeks of work, and then STRESS: the live stream.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 7, 2021

@Nextclouders @jospoortvliet That was the WORST, seriously. Way worse than giving a talk on a stage in every way… I did less bad than for Nc 21, but darn. Fun fact: the first 35min of the stream I was streaming at 45000kb/sec instead of 4500kb/sec - typo in setup.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 7, 2021

@Nextclouders @jospoortvliet I’m obviously not a pro streamer… So I didn’t know you could change that while the stream was ongoing - finally figured that out and fixed it. Sigh. Anyway, when it was finally time for the live Q&A things were better - that was fun.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 7, 2021

@Nextclouders @jospoortvliet Which brings us to the end - about 40 minutes of just answering questions from the community. Sadly we couldn’t answer everything as Frank had a call scheduled, but we got through many and it was fun to do! Community is what makes my job worthwhile, in the end!

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 7, 2021

@Nextclouders @jospoortvliet Of course, the 6 weeks of work was just the marketing part! The real work was done before that - 4 months of improving Nextcloud that got us Hub 22. So if you want to see the results of that, plus the marketingy stuff we did, check it out: https://t.co/6t9MBBdR2Y

When the internet became a thing, I was optimistic it would change the world for the good. Democratize news, fight evil agendas and fake news!

Turns out the web became a place for the crazies to come out and for mental health to be destroyed…

😭

Jul 7, 2021

@jospoortvliet It is a massive shame, but at the same time - well, we’re all human and humans are not THAT far evolved from apes… Perhaps this was always what would happen - group behavior running amok.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 7, 2021

@jospoortvliet Wouldn’t it be great if #opensource & #decentralization could help?

I sadly just don’t know how… Fighting fake news and crazies is even harder in a decentralized and anonymous world! Personally, I struggle with that dilemma - smart ideas are appreciated!

As usual, @doctorow hits the nails on their heads in this thread and column. Now, I personally ALSO think monopolies are economically inefficient, but there are far bigger problems with the power of #GAFAM in tech, to jump to the real meat!

Jul 7, 2021

So you might have seen #BanSurveillanceAdvertising - a bunch of #privacyfirst companies, including #Nextcloud, signed a public letter today.

It was triggered by the Norwegian Consumer Council - but of course, we see many consumer organizations say the same.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 8, 2021

1/ So, been a crazy day, hence the quietness… sorry for that.

A few things going on: (thread)

– @jospoortvliet

Jul 8, 2021

@jospoortvliet 2/ Had a call with friends from Canonical, Collabora and others for an event we’re organizing. Trying to answer questions like who should keynote, what the theme is (open source, of course, but what else?) and so on.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 8, 2021

@jospoortvliet 3 / Another call with Univention & OpenXchange about SPS and how to bring #DigitalSovereignty to gov’t. Fascinating how MS & others are claiming their products fit that vision, even though DS is about independence from GAFAM/hyperscalers. Lobying at work.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 8, 2021

@jospoortvliet 4/ let me not forget I spend some more time setting up my ‘new’ laptop. It’s the old machine of my partner, and now my office laptop with @openSUSE & @kdecommunity plasma (‘cuz that’s how I roll). Defaults really improved, I had less to tweak than I used to!

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 8, 2021

@jospoortvliet @openSUSE @kdecommunity 5 / last but not least, discussed a bunch of PR things and then had dinner with some ppl in the office - there’s a local burger place making incredibly good chili-cheese-fries - so full bellies, happy people and nice conversations.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 8, 2021

@jospoortvliet @openSUSE @kdecommunity 6 - Let me also note that I had several more calls with partners and there’s a lot of good stuff happening - but also more to do! Did you know @Nextclouders is hiring? Also for my team, if you feel you’re up to it 🙃

Fun fact: if an algorithm at Google, MS or Apple decides to shut your account down, there’s not much you can do. No more access to, well, everything you did and didn’t pay for.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 9, 2021

@jospoortvliet Your XBOX games? Sorry, create a new account and buy again.

Your Gmail you use to unlock other accounts? Right, hope you didn’t forget any passwords as your identity is lost.

Your private photos? You had no backup? Tsssk. Oh, this WAS your backup? yeah, no.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 9, 2021

@jospoortvliet Oh, you have a Family account at Microsoft? Then your entire family is affected - you won’t be able to change settings on their accounts anymore.

Why was your account blocked?

Yeah, no, we won’t tell you that. Ever.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 9, 2021

@jospoortvliet You can of course try to fill in a form. And wait. Fill it in again, maybe. Or wait some more. No, you can’t call. Or visit. We have no time. You didn’t pay us enough, our companies are barely profitable… Right?

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 9, 2021

@jospoortvliet Anyhow, it’s fun if it happens to you. Google claims - a few million accounts get shut a year, MS says 100K or so, where Google might count spam and bot accounts and Microsoft not? It’s not clear, why would it be, they’re gods. Deal with it.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 9, 2021

@jospoortvliet The good news is that the EU is taking action - the upcoming Digital Services Act requires more transparency, an easy recourse process and access to independent arbitrage when accounts get shut and users want it back.

Go, @EU_Commission

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 9, 2021

1/2 So, good fun - Nextcloud desktop client 3.2.4 was just published, I updated the website and did a little post on our forums and social media.

The desktop team (4 ppl) is making good progress and we have a lot of community contributions lately.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 9, 2021

@jospoortvliet 2/2 I look forward to the next release. There are so many small and large things that can make the use of the desktop client better! Syncing is hard and needs a lot of effort - it’s taken us a while to hire a good team but we’re really moving forward fast, now.

The reason it’s ‘OK" for Github to just take all this public data is simply because they got an army of lawyers that will bully anyone who disagrees with it into submission. Not because it is fair use or because the “output belongs to t he operator”. https://t.co/MOXArnBwEA

Jul 11, 2021

@bequietofficial @jospoortvliet Now I’m not really an RGB fan - a computer case should be invisible, ideally, which is why I have a white case and dislike the black accents. But I did have to look up OpenRGB of course - gotta try it out 🙃

Worked well, so 🎉 if you’re into colors.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 11, 2021

In other nerd news, I see @openSUSE has kernel 5.13 for me, time to update. And look at https://t.co/HsBI0tgiEe to figure out what’s new. I need to start following https://t.co/hP14EeHP5S more closely to make sure I know this already 😁

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 11, 2021

Audacity also updated. In the news with the latest show of mob mentality. Covid has really exposed the dangers of group behavior - that is, if politics hadn’t before - and #opensource was never immune, but it seems to escalate.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 11, 2021

@jospoortvliet Social media really brought out the worst in us all, it’s depressing. It is stunning how much people can be in denial over reality. Once upon a time only we’d dismiss flat earthers and similar deniers as ‘crazy’, it turns out it is mainstream now…

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 11, 2021

@jospoortvliet That means you can no longer comfortably consider people with silly beliefs ‘crazy’ or just dumb. There are smart, mentally healthy (as far as humans ever are) people believing objective, obvious nonsense of the style of alien abductions & flat earth.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 11, 2021

@jospoortvliet And the reason is group behavior: your ‘clan’ demands you believe it, and in stunning 1984 style, we make ourselves do so. Sure, I studied psychology, I knew people are capable of incredible mental gymnastics. Religion, esp cults, show as much. But still, wow.

  • @jospoortvliet

Jul 11, 2021

@jospoortvliet Anyhow, depressive topic, I’ll shut up now and will try to think and talk about more positive things 🙃

@prototypefund @jospoortvliet It integrates deeply with Circles, which we were just overhauling to integrate it in Nextcloud 22 - and it speaks for their collaboration and communication skills that this all worked out. Also - hard work, helping me out doing a screencast and writing about it!

Jul 14, 2021
