Thank you very much to @josp0001 for the invitation to curate @imakefoss this week!

Things I’ll be tweeting about include #FOSS in High-Performance Computing (#HPC) & scientific research, my favourite #FOSS people/projects, interesting blog posts & news, etc.

Let’s get started with a small quiz.

What percentage of the Top 500 of (publicly known) supercomputers is heavily relying on Free and Open Source Software?

Answer in the next tweet in this thread…

#FOSS #HPC

^ @kehoste

Nov 18, 2020

@kehoste The answer is basically 100%!

All supercomputers in the infamous Top500 list (@top500supercomp) are running a GNU/Linux distribution as operating system.

Check for yourself via https://t.co/QRukrO0Q5J (pick ‘Operating System" in Category).

Nov 18, 2020

@kehoste @top500supercomp Has it always been like this?

No, not at all; see https://t.co/XTxdrn96cn.

Supercomputers have run a variety of types of operating systems over the years. The total takeover by GNU/Linux only happened quite recently (Nov'17).

And this is just the beginning…

Knowing that the open source software that you’ve been working on almost daily for the last 10 years is helping with providing the scientific software stack on the fastest supercomputer in Europe is amazing… #HPC #FOSS

@kehoste Not only has @fzj_jsc been an early adopter of @easy_build, they have also actively contributed to it in various ways, by organizing hackatons & meetings, promoting the project, implementing various enhancements, adding support for additional software, …

Thank you!

Nov 19, 2020

While curating this account, I want to put some #FOSS projects which I like in particular in the spotlight.

Let’s start with OpenHPC (@OpenHPCcomm), which provides packages for a bunch of common software components for HPC systems, along with documentation.

^ @kehoste

Nov 19, 2020

@OpenHPCcomm @kehoste Although it’s difficult to quantify, there’s no doubt that OpenHPC has had a huge impact on the High-Performance Computing (HPC) community, especially for smaller HPC sites who lack the manpower and expertise to start from scratch.

Nov 19, 2020

@OpenHPCcomm @kehoste Go check out their extensive documentation on how to build your own #HPC cluster: https://t.co/s7Snog7uxM

They support both x86_64 (Intel/AMD CPUs) and aarch64 (Arm 64-bit CPUs), so why not tie those @Raspberry_Pi boards together and build your own supercomputer!

^ @kehoste

Nov 19, 2020

@OpenHPCcomm @kehoste @Raspberry_Pi They also provide a detailed tutorial to set up your own #HPC cluster in the cloud (@awshpc), see https://t.co/9Hg2OoGhTV .

And if you’re stuck, you can reach out to the OpenHPC community via the mailing list or Slack (see https://t.co/cVfQBCgXCa).

This is a tremendously important article, talking about ‘open source heroes" and the “dark side” of open source.

https://t.co/8cYFFRouzs

If you like #FOSS, grab a coffee and read it (5 min).

It’s very important to get people informed about things like maintainer burnout, etc.

Nov 21, 2020

@peripateticacad @killyourfm Yes please!

We have @easy_build coffee mugs, which were very popular at our last meetup…

I can certainly emphatize with this.

I often find myself spending several hours after work weeding through contributions, or working on my own pull requests, for the #FOSS projects I’m involved with.

My advice: ‘Careful, you don’t want to start a community…"

^ @kehoste

Nov 21, 2020

@kehoste I don’t want to sound too negative here though…

Working on a (semi-)popular #FOSS project is fun, and can be very rewarding.

I’ve made a lot of friends thanks to pushing code to GitHub that others picked up on and found useful.

If you feel overwhelmed, get help from others!

Figuring why the build of an open source software package fails can be frustrating at times.

It gets really ‘interesting" when the build procedure involves CMake though… So many layers, hard to find the actual problem, etc.

Is it just me?
